"If You're So Fucking Bored, POST..." If it's not obvious, that would be my exhortation to myself not 5 minutes ago. That it took that long to actually ACT on the suggestion to create my own entertainment is a good gauge of the stubborn self-spitefulness that is Yohannon. Considering that I left everyone hanging with that less than loquacious post regarding Keith's visit from Maryland* I suppose I could call it self-imposed karma.
Keith's visit was fun packed and jam filled -- we did touristy shit that I don't have a good excuse to try without handy out-of-town relations. Or at least attempted to -- from his arrival Thursday night until he returned to the East coast the last day of June, we were not only socked in with the usual fog, but also with this gray haze that lacked the charm of the clouds of roiling moisture pouring in through the Golden Gate or over Twin Peaks past Sutro Tower. Ironically, as I drove him to the Oakland airport it was apparent that the prevailing winds and shifted back to on-shore -- his only glimpse of the SF skyline was really, really clear... but very tiny in the distance.
His take was that it would give him an excuse to fly out again. I sure hope so -- it's nice to have a reality check on one's sexuality from time to time that doesn't bounce.
Considering the lateness of the hour (and that Roni and I are visiting the third member of our triad, lunarphoenix , tomorrow up in Vacaville for lunch) I think the best thing I can do is post this link to the SF Pride 2008 gallery for now, and then go into details later. I comment on some of the pics, so it won't COMPLETELY lack context.
Yo go boom now....
* Yes, it was his. Yes, he did. No, I didn't -- I choked, much to my chagrin, although not until after he was done. And yes, that was all as perverse as some of y'all assumed it was, albeit as vaguely worded as possible. Why yes, I AM this insufferable in person.
All-In: The Poker Musical We saw the concert of this tonight.
My review: It was better than you would expect. A few of the songs were quite well-done, and the pseudo-Phil Hellmuth character was quite funny if not quite sufficiently egotistical, and watching him sing "I Can Dodge Bullets Baby" and "If It For Luck I'd Win Every Time" was most excellent. The singers were all quite strong, but the dancers needed some help, a lot of practice, and a new choreographer.
The lyrics were quite full of poker double entendres. It worked at first, but got tiresome pretty quickly. When the slinky vixen was crawling all over Alfonse d'Amato (yes, the real one) while singing "Bad Beat You Boy" it felt clever, and it worked well for "Slow Roll". In "I'm Down To The Felt Over You", a relationship woes song, it was less effective. "I've Got A Full House When I'm Paired Next To You" completely failed, and the song should be taken out and shot with some of the bullets that Phil Hellmuth dodged.
"The River" was beautifully performed by Jimmy Lockett, but didn't seem to work conceptually, even though I really wanted it to.
All in all, it was pretty decent for a show that was obviously still rough. I have moderately high hopes for it.
I'm so sick 12 hours of poker, and all I want to do is go to the bellagio and gamble more :). I'm exhausted, though, and supposedly catching a plane at 10:30am tomorrow, so I'm headed to bed. We'll see if I actually make the plane.
T24,200 - final count my table was tough. Not super tough like better than me, but still, not juicy. There were some bad players, but they were generally replaced by decent ones. Although I might feel differently if I had been the recipient of some of the chip spewage - there were definitely some big mistakes. But not frequent ones.
Anyway, it's nice to pick up chips on day 1, but day 2 is where the blinds start to pick up and you can really build a stack if you make some hands. So it is good just to be still alive. I'm flying home tomorrow, and then back Tuesday night for day 2 on Wednesday.
movin' on up [Wanderlust] This is the 'view' from our first hotel. There was really no way to get the entire 6' wide scope of the room into the frame without a wide-angle lens, but I think you get the general gist:
Downstairs Neighbor politely slunk upstairs yesterday to apologize. "I don't know if this is a tacky way to say 'thank you,'" she said, plunking a package of roman candles down on our kitchen table, "but..."
We laughed our asses off. DN has many faults, but her sense of humor has always been exquisite.
We're home safe and sound... Suffice it to say, this was the worst camping trip we've had yet. Not so bad it makes us swear off camping, but definitely we had some unhappy days. Still, none of us our sick, we have all our limbs, the car is working okay, and Dinah is doing fine.
6k exactly heading into the dinner break. It's been brutal, no big pots, no big hands, rarely seeing a turn or river.
After the break we're at 150-300 w/ 25 antes, so an M a little under 10. I'll be looking for a good spot to jam over an opener. A bit of a discouraging spot, but one nice thing about NLH is that such things rarely last, I'll soon have more chips or be out. Just gotta find a good spot and then get lucky.
Surprise Stamina and Prescription Swim Goggles Zoë was invited to a pool party, and when we got there I realized none of the other parents had really planned to get in the water. I hadn't either, but I'm always prepared because I'm neurotic like that. Since the kids were all clustered in the deep end I figured they needed an adult in there with them. Yeah, they can swim, but 9 feet is 9 feet and it makes me nervous. Besides, I had my new swim goggles to try out!
I can tread water (with some swimming and horse play thrown in, but mostly treading water) for an hour. Who knew? :) And my new goggles work really well. I could clearly identify each child, rather than "there's a child sized pinkish blob, which kids were wearing pink bathing suits?" identification. Everything was slightly askew though, El Greco-y. The goggles correct my near sightedness, but do nothing for my astigmatism. I got a slight headache when transitioning back to my glasses but I suspect that'll be lessened as I get used to making the switch.
We managed to find the sort of barrettes that Cassidy's mom has been on the lookout for. She's thrilled. Cassidy's hair is so fine, regular barrettes just fall out; now she's set. (She needs the clippy ones, like, erm alligator clips if they were flat & without teeth. Googling says they may commonly be called "Single Prong Alligator Hair Clip" who knew? I always thought alligator clips had teeth and were for electronics. Anyway, the website for the barrettes is www.weeones.com)
I am tired. I need a good long shower. And I need to pack Zoë's bag tonight. Yikes.
"Handwriting" I made a comment on premkudva's post without logging in, and later apologized. Prem's response to this was, "But I recognized your handwriting!"
I very often hear laments about snail mail, and the art of letter-writing, having lapsed in the electronic era. "There is nothing like a hand-written letter," goes the grouse. "You don't get a sense of the individual."
I disagree. I may not see someone's handwriting, but over a period of time, whether someone writes or types, that person's style and persona come clearly across through the words, so it's the communication that's important to me, not whether it's handwritten or typed or sent by fax. The communication carries the stamp of the person as much as hes handwriting does....
Also, one tends to forget that in the old era of snail mail, many people would just not write letters or communicate at all...now, with the ease of communication, a short email cc-ed to lots of friends or relatives makes it easier for people to post short notes...and keep in touch.
And again, those who are moaning about not having handwriting seem to forget all those dreadfully illegible scrawls one had to struggle to make sense of....today's typing is unambiguous (except when the English descends to the local language so much that it's difficult to follow) and clear...I remember a hilarious passage in Wodehouse where someone thinks that a t says "lingfear" when it says "Landseer"...Lord Emsworth has scribbled so badly that the telegram-sender could not understand what he meant.
I type, nowadays, faaaar faster than I write. When I interview someone, I type straight into my laptop and don't have to worry about deciphering what that scrawl actually could be....
Yes, I do love a letter that has some nice handwriting which expresses a good thought...but there is a lot about handwritten letters that I don't miss.

All-Purpose Political Manifesto Here's a nice generic political message....
Nice to see a political message that is also so politically correct. Freedom, the essence of democracy is preserved; there is no mandate as to WHO to vote for!
T19,200 (first break) from T20K starting. Played no big pots, lost a couple medium and won a lot of small. Our table has an empty seat on my left, which is excellent. Two pros, which is not so good, but the table is still decent, if not as juicy as I'd like for the big one.
One tight player lost with a set of aces vs an (obvious) wheel, had 1000 left, and seems to have just given up and left! Why not just jam a few times instead? So weird, but again, good for us, especially as the winner of the pot is a bit inexperienced. No one terrible, though.
Hiding in plain sight I spent the weekend in Vegas to exhibit with my wife at the largest Skin show of the year, the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference (IESCS). I dropped in to root for my friends at the WSOP and had a nice chat with Nolan, and later sabyl and Robert Lauria. who had a great series. Thanks for the ride, Sabyl.
We had a good show and spent the rest of this week doing the paperwork to complete all our sales. I'll be back in LV for Cosmoprof, arriving Saturday 7/12, as an attendee. I'll have more time to visit with all you Vegans during this visit. Hopefully we'll all be over at the Rio, rooting for our chat frendz to win the Main Event.
Last night the Peg and I went to see the fireworks in Benicia and afterward stopped in at the Pastime Bar and Poker Room. They had one table of $2/2 $4 to go No Limit with a $200> capped buyin, but more importantly they had Karaoke! We had a good time singing and listening. All-in-all a great 4th.
table so far there is hoang ho, who has lots of small NLH cashes, a guy named Bird who is a high limit action player, a guy who looks like a total amateur, and a European with an EPT jacket. Another amateur looking guy just sat down. Pretty reasonable, but the proof will be in the play.
I was only able to sleep 8.5 hours, so I did a quick workout and played an hour of 10-25 NLH.
Time to gamble.
Ian gerard just sat down, time to look him up (I look at the registration cards to get info on people :) ).
to the high catbus (Studio Ghibli Museum, Akihabara) [Wanderlust] Last night's plan A: take the JR line out to Koenji, where a friend-of-a-friend was tending bar, and try to sample some of Tokyo's nightlife.
Last night's actual activities: realize at 8pm that we were barely able to move, much less drink. Send apologetic emails, then stagger to the nearest grocery store to get some takeaway fruit and veggies (Tokyo dining so far having been pretty light on both), eat them in our room and collapse. Perhaps not our most glorious moment as intrepid world travelers, but the jetlag demons will have their due. But it was all for the best: we managed to sleep (if somewhat fitfully toward the end) until about 6am, allowing us to get up, shower and shave leisurely in plenty of time to go hit this morning's destination. Where were we going to?
bedtime 10-11 hrs sleep and then the fun begins. I think the original rooting post is up to date with share listings, so email me by 11:30am tomorrow if anything is wrong.
